BEST TIME TO VISIT WOOLACOMBE
MONTH-BY-MONTH GUIDE TO WEATHER, SURF, CROWDS AND VALUE
Quick answer: For families: June and July. For surfing: September, October, March. For avoiding crowds and better value: May or October.
There is no single best month — it depends entirely on what you want from the trip. Woolacombe can be glorious in February (if you are a walker who likes an empty beach and dramatic skies) and maddening in August (if you are stuck on the A361 at Barnstaple for two hours with a carful of children). What follows is an honest breakdown of every month, so you can pick the one that actually fits your visit.
MONTH BY MONTH
JANUARY & FEBRUARY
Cold, quiet, and honestly quite special if you are not chasing sunshine. The beach is empty. Surfers get some of the biggest swells of the year — Atlantic groundswells that make conditions unsuitable for beginners but genuinely exciting for experienced surfers. Walkers have the South West Coast Path largely to themselves. Most holiday lets are at their cheapest. Expect most cafés and restaurants to be closed or reduced-hours; check before you travel. Sea temperature: 8–10°C. Wetsuits essential for water.
MARCH & APRIL
Underrated. Weather starts to improve — still cool, but you can get long bright days. Spring swell keeps coming, often producing cleaner, more organised waves than the big winter storms. Crowds are low. This is the best window if you surf at an intermediate level and want some peace. Easter week is the exception: prices spike and the village fills up with families making the most of the school holiday. Book early if Easter is your target, or choose early March to avoid it entirely.
MAY
A shoulder month that rewards the flexible. Weather is warming, the sea is still cold but wetsuits make that irrelevant, and the crowds have not arrived yet. The late May half-term brings a noticeable surge for one week — prices rise and accommodation goes fast. Outside that week, May is excellent: emptier beaches, open businesses, genuine early-summer feel. One of the best-value months to visit.
JUNE & JULY
Peak season for families, and with good reason. Weather is reliably warm, daylight hours are long, and the sea is warm enough that children can actually enjoy the water (~14–15°C by late June, closer to 16°C in July). The beach at Woolacombe is large enough that it rarely feels overcrowded even when busy, though the car parks fill by mid-morning on hot weekdays. Surf schools are in full operation — ideal for first-timers. See our full Woolacombe surf and beach guide for what to expect on the sand.
AUGUST
The hottest month and the busiest by far. Sea temperature peaks at around 16–17°C — the warmest of the year. But August brings real costs: accommodation prices are highest, roads into North Devon are genuinely awful at peak times. The A361 from Barnstaple towards Braunton and Croyde regularly backs up for miles on summer Saturdays, particularly around the August bank holiday weekend. If you must come in August, avoid travelling on Saturday or Sunday and book accommodation well in advance. Surf conditions tend to be small and inconsistent — great for lessons, not for performance surfing.
SEPTEMBER
The best all-round month. School is back, so crowds drop sharply from the first week — yet the sea is still warm (often 16–17°C, the residual warmth from summer), and swell begins to build again as Atlantic storms start tracking further south. You get the combination that is hard to find: decent wave height, warm water, and uncrowded beaches. Prices come down. Restaurants have availability again. The light turns golden. If you can only come once, make it September. Check the current surf forecast before you go to see what's building.
OCTOBER
Genuinely good, and chronically overlooked. Autumn swell picks up significantly — October can produce excellent surf for all levels. Crowds are low. The scenery is at its most dramatic, with the hills behind the beach beginning to turn. Some businesses close from mid-October onwards, so check opening times before you travel, particularly for restaurants and activity providers. The second half of half-term week in late October brings a brief spike in families, but outside that window it is quiet. For more on the surf, read the Woolacombe surf guide for a full seasonal breakdown.
NOVEMBER & DECEMBER
Largely the preserve of walkers, locals, and the occasional committed surfer. Wild and beautiful but limited on the what's-on front. Most holiday accommodation is available and cheap. If you want solitude and coastal drama, this is your season. If you want a working café after 4pm, call ahead.
FOR FAMILIES
Best: June and July. Weather is reliable, sea conditions are manageable, surf schools are running, and everything is open. Kids can actually swim without a full wetsuit.
Avoid: The August bank holiday weekend specifically. The combination of peak traffic on the A361 and maximum crowds makes it the hardest time to arrive and the most expensive to stay. If your only option is August, choose the first two weeks over the last week.
Good alternative: May (outside half-term). Quieter, cheaper, still warm enough for a good holiday.
FOR SURFERS
Best months: September and October for the quality combination of swell, warm water, and empty lineups. March and April for spring groundswells with few people in the water. November and February if you want raw power and don't mind cold water and short daylight.
Avoid for surf: July and August. Small, mushy, inconsistent waves. Great for lessons, not for performance surfing.
Always check today's tide times and the current surf forecast before paddling out — tides at Woolacombe shift conditions significantly.
FOR AVOIDING CROWDS AND BETTER VALUE
Best months: May (avoid half-term week) and October (avoid half-term week). Both offer open businesses, mild weather, and genuine tranquillity. Prices for accommodation can be 30–50% lower than peak-summer equivalents. You still get a full Woolacombe experience — just without the queue for parking.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH TO VISIT WOOLACOMBE?
September is the best all-round month for most visitors. The sea is at its warmest (16–17°C), autumn swell starts to build for surfers, and crowds drop sharply after schools return. It combines the benefits of summer without the August congestion. For families tied to school holidays, June and July are the best options.
IS WOOLACOMBE NICE IN OCTOBER?
Yes — October is one of the most underrated months to visit. Autumn swell makes it excellent for surfing, crowds are low, prices drop, and the North Devon coast looks spectacular in golden light. Some cafés and restaurants reduce their hours from mid-October, so check ahead. Half-term week in late October brings a brief spike in visitors, but outside that it is genuinely peaceful.
