Dogs on Woolacombe Beach
Woolacombe is a dog-friendly beach base, but the zones matter. Here is what the current rules mean for your visit, where dogs can go in summer, and the best coastal walks nearby.
Rules
Current dog restrictions on Woolacombe Beach
Woolacombe Beach is privately managed by Parkin Estates. North Devon Council lists it as a private beach where dogs are restricted to certain areas and visitors should check local signage. The council also says its district-wide dog rules still apply, including clearing up after your dog and putting your dog on a lead if instructed by an authorised officer.
For 2026, Woolacombe Beach uses these zones:
Zone A
At the north end near the rocks and village. No dogs from Good Friday or 1 April, whichever is earlier, until 30 September.
Zone B
Between the stream and Mill Rock. Dogs allowed, but must be on leads from 1 May until 30 September.
Zone C
South of Mill Rock. No dog restrictions, making it the simplest year-round dog area on the beach.
Local visitor information states that the main-season restrictions apply between 9am and 6pm. Beach signs remain the on-the-day guide, especially around the stream, beach huts and Mill Rock.
Summer
Where dogs can go in summer
In summer, aim for Zone C. It is south of Mill Rock, away from the most crowded village end, and has no dog restrictions. Marine Drive is often the handiest parking area for this dune-backed southern stretch.
If you start from The Esplanade or Sandy Burrows, read the beach map first. Zone A is the area to avoid with dogs during the restricted period, while Zone B is lead-only on the stated dates. On hot days, early morning and evening walks are usually kinder for paws.
Do not assume the smaller coves north of Woolacombe follow the same system. Barricane Beach allows dogs from October to April, and dogs on leads from May to September. Combesgate Beach has separate local controls: North Devon Council says to check signage, while Woolacombe Tourist Information states no dogs from 30 April to 30 September. For a straightforward dog beach day in summer, Woolacombe Zone C is the clearest choice.
All year
Year-round dog-friendly beach access
Outside the main restriction period, Woolacombe is easier. The seasonal limits on Zone A and Zone B lift after 30 September, so autumn, winter and early spring are the best times for a longer dog walk from the village end.
North Devon Council's dog Public Spaces Protection Order is in force from 1 January 2024 for three years, so it is current for the 2026 season. The general duties still apply year-round: pick up after your dog and follow any lead directions.
The beach is long and exposed. At higher tides the dry sand narrows, and the rocky ends can leave less space than expected. If your dog is unsure around surfboards, balls or horses, keep them close until you reach a quieter stretch.
Walks
Dog walks near Woolacombe
The beach is the obvious walk, but Woolacombe also sits on the South West Coast Path. You can head towards Morte Point, Mortehoe, Lee and Ilfracombe, or south towards Putsborough, Baggy Point and Croyde.
For a classic local route, try the Morte Point walk. The National Trust route starts from Mortehoe village car park, is about 2.2 miles, and includes uneven, rocky and sometimes steep coast path. Dogs are welcome under close control. Use a lead around livestock, cliff edges and wildlife.
Potters Hill and Woolacombe Down are good alternatives when you want sea views without spending the whole walk on sand. National Trust routes here range from about 0.75 miles to 3 miles, with views across Woolacombe Bay, Baggy Point and Morte Point.

Village
Woolacombe village dog-friendliness
Woolacombe and Mortehoe are generally dog-friendly visitor areas. You will see dogs around the village, beach car parks and coast path throughout the year.
Still, do not assume every cafe, pub, terrace or accommodation accepts dogs. Policies change by season, room type and seating area, so check directly before booking or sitting down.
In peak summer, plan shade and water stops. The village can be busy, and the walk back up from the beach feels longer with a sandy, tired dog.

Practical tips for visiting with a dog
- Check signs first. Use the beach map and entrance signs before relying on memory.
- Pick the right car park. The Esplanade and Sandy Burrows are closest to village access. Marine Drive runs behind the dunes and is handy for the southern beach; the National Trust manages Marine Drive and members park free.
- Carry water. The dog-zone map marks drinking water near the village end, but a bottle and bowl are still useful.
- Use dog bins properly. If a bin is full, take waste away.
- Lead up where needed. Around Morte Point, Woolacombe Down and coast path sections, use a lead near livestock, wildlife, cliffs and busy paths.
- Watch heat and tide. Summer sand can get hot, and a rising tide reduces space.
