Exmoor Zoo can be a worthwhile day out from Woolacombe when children are interested in animals, talks and a slower attraction. Treat it as a planned visit, not an automatic fit. Children who like watching animals
Exmoor Zoo is a zoo visit, not a farm-park play day. Its official what's-on page lists daily talks and animal encounters, so check your date before promising a particular talk.
Families who can plan around walking
The zoo describes the site as a gentle slope, with two short steeper slopes and a mix of tarmac and scree paths. Footwear, pushchair choice and mobility planning matter.
Older children considering experiences
Do not assume paid animal experiences suit all ages. The zoo says meet-and-greet experiences are not offered to children under 8, with some older age limits.
Timing
Plan the visit as a half-day-plus outing
Exmoor Zoo's official opening page says it currently opens at 10am, usually closes at 5pm in summer and 4pm in winter, and accepts last entry no less than one hour before closing. The zoo also recommends allowing at least two hours to look around.
For a Woolacombe family, this is normally more than a rainy-hour filler. Build in the drive, arrival, toilets, food and time to pause at talks. For kit and layers, use the Woolacombe packing list.
Access
Pushchairs, wheelchairs and easier routes need checking
The zoo's accessibility page says at least 65% of paths are tarmac, with other paths laid to scree. Manual wheelchairs are not advisable in the lower scree-path section, while electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters can access those paths. The steepest incline is near the initial animal enclosures, and the zoo suggests an alternative reverse route through the cafeteria for some visitors.
There are three mobility scooters available to hire, but the zoo says they are popular in high season and suggests reserving by phone. Easy-access parking is described as three spaces in the main car park. The accessibility toilet has a pull-down nappy changer, but the zoo states it is not suitable for children over 10kg.

Food, toilets, dogs and ground rules
- Food: the zoo says families can use the African Cafe and conservatory tea rooms or bring their own food for designated picnic areas. Hot food service is listed from 11.30am to 2.30pm.
- Dogs: the zoo rules say no dogs or pets are permitted except assistance dogs. The accessibility page adds that emotional support animals are not allowed on site.
- Children: the zoo rules say children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times, and visitors should not feed the animals or cross barriers.
- Tickets: the official ticket page gives age bands for standard entry, with children under 3 admitted free. Prices are not repeated here because they can change.
- Public transport: the find-us page says car is by far the easiest way to reach the zoo. The listed bus option involves a quarter-mile country-lane walk from the A399 turning.
Weather call
Do not treat it as fully indoor
The official access and what's-on information points to a visit with outdoor paths, animal enclosures and open talks. That can work in dry weather or light showers with coats, but this guide does not claim Exmoor Zoo is fully indoor or weather-proof.
If the forecast is poor, compare it with North Devon rainy days with kids before you book. Heavy rain changes the value of the drive from Woolacombe and the comfort of moving around the site.
