There are two main approaches from Ipswich. Choose between them on the day based on live traffic.

  • Route 1: A12, M25, M4, M5 (recommended for most). Leave Ipswich for the A12 southbound. Join the M25 and work round to the west side of London. Take the M4 west. Join the M5 southbound near Bristol. Leave the M5 at Junction 27 for the A361. Follow the A361 North Devon Link Road towards Barnstaple. This may make sense if the A12 is badly delayed or the eastern side of the M25 looks poor. The M5 exit for Woolacombe is Junction 27. From there, the A361 North Devon Link Road is the main road into North Devon. Devon County Council describes it as the gateway to northern Devon and northern Cornwall, connecting the area to the rest of Devon and the UK via the M5.

  • The first section from the M5 towards Tiverton is dual carriageway, then much of the route towards Barnstaple is single carriageway with limited overtaking sections.
  • Near Barnstaple, follow signs for the north Devon coast, Braunton/Ilfracombe and Woolacombe. The typical final approach uses the A399/A3123 towards Mullacott Cross, then the B3343 down into Woolacombe.
  • The B3343 into Woolacombe is 12 miles of local road. On busy summer weekends, allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes on Saturday afternoons in July and August.
  • Do not assume Woolacombe is just beyond Exeter. From M5 Junction 27 there is still a significant North Devon drive remaining.

For school-holiday Saturdays, avoid building the plan around a late-afternoon arrival if you can. That is when long-distance traffic, accommodation changeovers and beach-day traffic can overlap.

  • Leave Ipswich very early and aim to be past the M25 before the day builds.
  • Break the journey properly and accept a mid-afternoon arrival — plan at least two proper stops over a journey this long.
  • Travel on Friday evening or Sunday if your accommodation timing allows.
  • If you must travel on Saturday, add a buffer for the M5, A361 and Barnstaple approach.
