Luton Airport is close to the M1, so the road route is almost the same as from Luton town. Leave the airport on the A1081 and head for M1 junction 10, then follow the M1 south, M25 anti-clockwise, M4 west, M5 south and A361 into North Devon.

For international visitors hiring a car, this is a simple motorway-led route once you have left the airport. Avoid booking a same-evening arrival into Woolacombe if your flight lands late: after the terminal, luggage and car collection, the drive is still most of a day.

On the M4 route, Membury and Leigh Delamere are natural motorway-service stops before the M4/M5 interchange. On the M5, Strensham and Taunton Deane are common break points before the final push toward Tiverton and North Devon.

Try not to leave your first proper stop until Barnstaple on a peak Saturday. The A361 and coast roads are where traffic can feel slowest, so arrive fed, fuelled and ready for the last section.

Public transport

Rail is possible, but it needs London and Barnstaple connections

From Luton, take Thameslink toward London, usually via St Pancras International, then cross London for the Great Western route toward Exeter. From Exeter St Davids, change for the Tarka Line to Barnstaple. Woolacombe has no railway station, so the final leg is by bus, taxi or a pre-arranged lift.

Airport travellers can start at Luton Airport Parkway, reached from the terminal by the Luton DART. Check current rail times before booking because the London transfer and Barnstaple connection make the full journey sensitive to missed connections.

Rail can work for solo travellers packing light. For families, surfboards, self-catering luggage or arrivals after a long flight, driving is usually more practical.
