Woolacombe is approximately 155 miles from Reading via the M4 motorway west, the M5 south and the A361 North Devon Link Road. In normal traffic the drive takes 2 hours 45 to 3 hours 15. On peak summer Fridays and Saturdays, add 45 to 60 minutes for congestion on the M5 corridor and the final approach into Woolacombe.
Reading is one of the stronger M4-corridor departure points for Woolacombe. The route is motorway for most of the journey and becomes simpler once you leave the M5 at Tiverton for the A361 toward Barnstaple.
A Saturday morning departure from Reading, arriving in Woolacombe by late morning, gives you the best combination of road conditions and beach time. Friday afternoon in July and August is the one to plan around.
Driving
By car: the M4, M5 and A361
The main route from Reading to Woolacombe:
- Head west on the M4 from Reading. This is fast motorway through Berkshire, Wiltshire and into Somerset, making quick progress before you need to turn off for North Devon.
- Join the M5 southbound at junction 20 (Almondsbury, near Bristol) or continue to junction 27 (Tiverton). Junction 27 at Tiverton is the key exit for the A361 North Devon Link Road and is used by most Woolacombe visitors coming from the east. Tiverton services here is a convenient last major stop before Barnstaple.
- Follow the A361 west from Tiverton toward Barnstaple. The A361 is largely dual carriageway from Tiverton to near South Molton, which keeps journey times predictable compared to older cross-Devon routes.
- From Barnstaple, take the B3343 through Braunton to Woolacombe. This final 12 miles is single carriageway and is the section most affected by summer congestion. Allow extra time in July and August.
- Alternative via the A303: from Reading take the A4 or A34 south to Newbury, then the A303 west through Wiltshire and Somerset to Taunton, then the A361 to Barnstaple. This avoids any M25 direction entirely and can be faster outside peak times, though the A303 near Stonehenge does back up in summer.
Service station note: Leigh Delamere services on the M4 (between junctions 17 and 18) is a common stop for the Reading–North Devon run. The next significant fuel and food stop after that is at Tiverton (junction 27 on the M5).
Planning your visit
Day trip or overnight stay?
A day trip from Reading is possible but requires commitment. At approximately 3 hours each way, it is a full-day undertaking with limited beach time if you factor in summer parking and road conditions.
- For a day trip: aim to leave Reading by 7am in summer to arrive before the main car parks fill. Woolacombe's car parks fill early on hot days. See the parking guide for strategies.
- An overnight stay is generally more relaxing. A Saturday arrival and Sunday departure gives you a full day on the beach, a meal in the village and an easy return on quieter Sunday roads.
- Avoid Friday afternoon departures in July and August. The M4 and M5 carry significant westbound leisure traffic from the South East on summer Fridays. A Saturday morning departure from Reading is consistently faster and less stressful.

By train and bus
Reading has a GWR mainline connection that makes public transport a genuine option for non-drivers, though the total journey is long.
- Reading to Bristol Temple Meads by GWR takes approximately 1 hour on fast services.
- Bristol Temple Meads to Taunton is a further 30 to 40 minutes on the mainline toward Exeter.
- Taunton to Barnstaple on the Tarka Line takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. This is a scenic single-track service, not a high-speed link.
- Barnstaple to Woolacombe by local bus service to Woolacombe (check Devon bus timetables for current routes) takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on seasonal frequency.
- Total door-to-door: roughly 3 hours 30 to 4 hours 30 depending on connections. For groups or families with luggage, driving is considerably more practical.
