This is a long UK road trip, but it is realistic with planning. For most families, the best plan is an early start or a two-day drive with a stop around the Lake District, North Yorkshire or Bristol. Use the visitor guide and three-day itinerary before committing to such a long journey.
Edinburgh route
The drive from Edinburgh
The usual Edinburgh to Woolacombe route is M8 west towards Glasgow or A71/A702 to the M74, then M6, M5, M5 junction 27, A361 towards Barnstaple and the final local roads into Woolacombe. It is motorway or fast A-road for most of the distance, but still a big day.
Allow approximately 480-490 miles from Edinburgh city centre and add 40 to 60 minutes to Glasgow timings, depending on stops and traffic around Birmingham, Bristol and the North Devon Link Road.
If you drive in one day, a 6am departure gives you the best chance of reaching North Devon in the early afternoon. For a calmer trip, finish the final Devon section the next morning.
Glasgow route
The drive from Glasgow
From Glasgow, the cleanest route is usually M74 south, A74(M), M6 south, then M5 to junction 27 and the A361.
Plan on approximately 430-440 miles and typically 7.5-9 hours. The M6 section through the Lake District towards Preston is scenic, but it still needs proper rest stops.

Breaks
Single day or two days
A single-day drive is possible for determined Glasgow drivers leaving around 5-6am, but it is a demanding day and can still put you into the A361 during busy summer traffic.
Most Scotland visitors split the drive. Kendal, Penrith, York, the Harrogate area and Bristol all work as locality options, with no need to lock the plan to a specific overnight stop in this guide.
The two-day version is usually better with children, dogs, surf kit or a Saturday check-in. It gives you more room to park and unpack.
Stopover option
Why Bristol can work
The Bristol area is a useful overnight option if you want to push through most of the motorway mileage on day one. From Edinburgh, it is still a substantial drive, but it leaves a much shorter second morning into North Devon.
Leaving Bristol early on day two can get you past M5 junction 27 and onto the A361 before the worst holiday traffic builds. That usually feels better than reaching Barnstaple tired at the end of a very long single-day drive.
Car-free
By train
Train and bus is viable from Scotland to Woolacombe, but it is a long connected journey. Routes can run from Glasgow Central or Edinburgh Waverley to London Euston, then across London to Paddington for GWR towards Exeter and the Tarka Line from Exeter to Barnstaple.
Barnstaple is the railhead for Woolacombe, not the end of the trip. From there, you need a bus, taxi or lift. Check National Rail, GWR, Avanti and Traveline because timetables, engineering work and bus connections can change.

Planning
Tips for the long haul
- Start early if driving in one day. A 6am start is easier than hitting Birmingham and North Devon late in the day.
- Build breaks into the plan before setting off. Named stops beat vague hopes of pushing on.
- A361 timing: Friday 3pm to 8pm in July and August is the worst window for the A361 and Barnstaple approaches.
- Decide your Woolacombe parking plan before the final leg. After hundreds of miles, you do not want to circle the village at the busiest time.
- Use live traffic on the day, especially around Birmingham, Bristol, M5 junction 27 and Barnstaple.
Scotland to Woolacombe is absolutely doable, but it deserves proper planning. If you can spare the time, a Bristol stopover or a northern overnight break makes the journey feel more like the start of a holiday.
