Route 2: the A361 direct option
Swindon has an unusual advantage: the A361 begins close to the town and eventually becomes the North Devon Link Road. You can use it as a cross-country route through Wiltshire and Somerset, with possible routing through Devizes, Frome, Shepton Mallet, the Glastonbury area and Taunton Vale before continuing west towards Barnstaple.
This can be pleasant midweek or off-peak. It is not the route to choose when you need a predictable Friday arrival. Junctions, town centres and lower speed limits make it more variable, so allow around 3 to 3 hours 45 and check conditions before committing.

When to leave Swindon
If you are travelling on a summer Friday, aim to leave by noon or wait until later in the evening. The main pressure point is the M5 south of Bristol towards Taunton and Junction 27, followed by the A361 and the Barnstaple to Braunton section. On hot Saturdays, an early start helps because parking and the final road into Woolacombe both become harder after late morning.
