Instow is North Devon's estuary beach — calm sand facing across the Torridge to Appledore, dog-friendly year-round, and the most convenient beach stop on the Tarka Trail. Different from the Atlantic coast in almost every way.

What Instow is and why it's different
Instow is a small village on the west bank of the Torridge estuary, between Barnstaple and Bideford. The beach faces east across the water toward Appledore, sheltered from the Atlantic by the estuary's geography and Braunton Burrows to the north-west. This makes it an entirely different experience from Woolacombe or Croyde.
Instow is an estuarine beach — calm, sheltered, naturally suited to families who want flat water rather than surf, dog walkers who need year-round access, and cyclists using the Tarka Trail. It is not a surf beach and not suitable for Atlantic sea swimming. What it offers instead is wide sand at the right tide state, sailing and watersports activity on the estuary, and a relaxed village esplanade with good food options.

Best for
Dog walking year-round, families with young children wanting calm water, cyclists on the Tarka Trail, and a quiet change of scene from the surf coast.
Not for
Surf, bodyboarding, Atlantic swimming, or a full resort beach day. The estuary character is very different — go in knowing that.

Approximately 25–30 minutes by car. Makes an ideal pairing as a day away from the Atlantic coast.
The beach
Instow beach: sand, tides and what to expect
Instow's beach is wide and sandy at mid-to-high tide, when the flat sand is exposed in a long, calm strip facing the estuary. At low tide the beach drains significantly and the estuary reveals mudflat — time your visit within 2–3 hours either side of high tide for the best beach experience. Check the tide times before setting off.
The water is generally calmer than any Atlantic-facing beach, making it suitable for paddling and supervised young children at high tide. The estuary water carries more silt than the open sea — it's typically less clear than Woolacombe — but safe for paddling in normal conditions. There is no RNLI lifeguard patrol here.
Instow is one of North Devon's most reliably dog-friendly beaches. Unlike Woolacombe, which has seasonal dog restrictions on parts of the beach, Instow has year-round access with no time restrictions on the main beach. It is a popular destination for dog walkers from across the region, particularly in summer when Woolacombe's central beach is restricted for dogs.

What to do at Instow
Tarka Trail
Instow sits directly on the Tarka Trail. The flat estuary section from Instow to Barnstaple (5 miles) and to Bideford (3 miles) is the most family-friendly stretch. Bike hire is available in Barnstaple; cycling is a natural way to reach or leave Instow. See the North Devon cycling guide for more.
Esplanade and village
The esplanade runs along the seafront with cafés and ice cream. A relaxed stop to watch the estuary traffic and sailing dinghies. Most cafés open from April through October.
Appledore ferry (seasonal)
A small foot passenger ferry operates between Instow and Appledore during summer, weather and tide permitting. A short crossing to the quayside village without needing a car — one of North Devon's most enjoyable short trips.
Birdwatching
Waders and wildfowl use the estuary mudflats at low tide. The Taw-Torridge estuary is an important estuarine habitat; patient birdwatchers can see a good variety of coastal species, especially in autumn and winter.
Getting here
How to get to Instow from Woolacombe
By car from Woolacombe: head via the A361 toward Barnstaple, then follow signs toward Bideford and Instow. The journey is approximately 25–30 minutes in normal traffic. Summer traffic around Barnstaple can extend this, particularly on Saturdays. A car park operates at Marine Parade in the village, close to the beach access and esplanade.
By bike: the Tarka Trail makes Instow a natural cycling destination from Barnstaple or Bideford. The traffic-free railway path runs through the village area. This is the most enjoyable way to arrive, and the Tarka Trail section from Barnstaple to Instow (5 miles) is genuinely flat and accessible for most cyclists and families.

Choosing
Instow vs Woolacombe: when to pick Instow
The two beaches serve genuinely different purposes and the choice is usually obvious once you know what you're looking for.
- Choose Instow when: travelling with a dog during the summer season restrictions at Woolacombe; wanting calm flat water for young children who don't need surf; cycling the Tarka Trail and looking for a beach stop; visiting in autumn or winter when exposed Atlantic beaches are too wild; wanting a quiet, unhurried afternoon rather than a full beach day.
- Choose Woolacombe when: wanting surf, big waves and a full beach resort experience; planning a swim with RNLI lifeguard cover; seeking bodyboarding, surf lessons or paddleboarding on the open sea.
Instow is useful precisely because it is different from Woolacombe. Running both places into the same day is also possible — Instow in the morning for dog walking and the esplanade, then Woolacombe in the afternoon for surf.
