Ilfracombe from Woolacombe

Ilfracombe is roughly 8 miles from Woolacombe by road and usually around 20 minutes by car, depending on summer traffic, parking and whether you route through Mortehoe or inland roads.

This is not Woolacombe with a smaller beach. It is a harbour town, with boats, quayside food, steep streets, Victorian seaside history and Damien Hirst's Verity looking out from the pier. It suits families who want a half-day wander, non-surfers who want something more town-based, and anyone looking for a realistic rainy-day fallback.

Before you leave Woolacombe, check today's conditions, the forecast and the tides. Ilfracombe can feel more sheltered than Woolacombe Beach in some westerly weather, but wind and rain still change the day quickly.

For boat trips, Ilfracombe is one of the easiest North Devon towns to plan around. Harbour kiosks and operators can cover shorter coastal cruises, wildlife trips and fishing trips, depending on the season and sea state.

If your group only wants a relaxed half day from Woolacombe, stay around the harbour, Verity, food and a shorter coastal trip if conditions suit.

Older Ilfracombe guides may still describe Tunnels Beaches as a family day-visitor attraction. Do not plan around that at the moment. Tunnels Beaches' own public closure statement says the beaches remain closed to general public visitors for the foreseeable future, with weddings, accommodation stays and pre-booked wedding viewing appointments unaffected.

That means it should be treated as Victorian seaside history and a closed landmark, not a current beach-day or wet-weather plan. If you see old advice about visiting Tunnels, check the current official status before you travel.

The Landmark Theatre on the seafront is the strongest weather-proof anchor if there is a suitable show, film, workshop or event on. It works best when you check the programme before setting off rather than turning up cold.

For families, Ilfracombe Aquarium is another practical town option. It is in the old lifeboat house on the pier and presents itself as an all-weather family attraction. Pair it with a short harbour walk, food and Verity if the rain eases.

For a harbour day, aim first for central parking near the pier or harbour. North Devon Council lists Ilfracombe Pier car park at EX34 9EQ with 136 standard spaces and 5 disabled bays. It is the simplest choice for the harbour, Verity, aquarium and boat trips, but that also means it can be busy in peak season.

Hillsborough car park is another useful option on the eastern side of town. North Devon Council lists Hillsborough car park at EX34 9QJ with 93 spaces. It can make sense if you are arriving from the Woolacombe side and do not need to be right on the pier.

Choose Ilfracombe if your group wants a change of rhythm: harbour, food, boat possibilities, Verity, a show or aquarium visit, and less dependence on beach conditions. It is especially useful when one part of the group is tired of sand or when the surf at Woolacombe is too messy for a relaxed family beach session.

Stay in Woolacombe if the day is bright, the tide works for the beach and your group mainly wants sand, swimming, bodyboarding or easy resort facilities. Woolacombe is the simpler beach day. Ilfracombe is the better town-and-harbour day.
