A look-and-learn guide to why Woolacombe, Morte Point, Baggy Point and nearby bays feel so different, without touching cliffs or collecting from protected places.
Short answer
Why the bays and headlands look different
North Devon's coast around Woolacombe is shaped by contrasting rocks, resistant headlands and active erosion. Harder or more resistant ridges help form bold points such as Morte Point and Baggy Point, while bays, beaches and dune-backed sands gather in the more sheltered spaces between them.
That is the useful visitor answer. The geology is not something you need to hammer, collect or climb on to enjoy. From public beaches, signed coast paths and safe viewpoints, you can notice the coast changing from broad sand at Morte Bay to broken, rocky headlands and then back into sheltered beach curves around Croyde and beyond.

Landscape clues
Morte Bay, Baggy Point and Morte Point
Morte Bay is the big classroom. Stand back from Woolacombe or Putsborough and you can see a broad sandy bay held between headlands. Baggy Point separates Croyde Bay from Morte Bay, while Morte Point forms the northern rocky edge near Mortehoe. The headlands make the coast feel enclosed, even though the beach itself is wide and open.
The British Geological Survey names the Morte Slate Formation at Morte Point, the Pickwell Down Sandstones inland and around Woolacombe Down, and the Baggy Sandstones and Upcott Slates around the Baggy Point side of the coast. You do not need to identify every unit on the ground. For a family walk, the more useful observation is that different rocks weather into different shapes: smoother slopes and downland in one direction, jagged rocky points in another, and sand gathered where waves and wind can move it.
The Historic England Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey for the north coast of Devon and Cornwall also treats this as an actively changing coastal zone, with erosion, blown sand and older raised-beach deposits all part of the wider story. That is why a geology walk here should be observational and cautious, not a search for loose material at the base of a cliff.
Look closely
What children can notice without touching a cliff
Use safe distance and simple prompts. Ask children to compare shapes first: is the coast low and sandy, steep and rocky, or grassy and rounded? Then look for layers and lines from a path or beach, not from beneath an overhang. Around headlands, rocks often show tilted bands, cracks and rougher faces. Along the bay, sand and dunes tell the softer, mobile part of the story.
On the Morte Point walk, the National Trust describes dramatic geology and sweeping coastal views. Treat those views as the attraction. Stay on the route, keep back from cliff edges, and do not go below cliff faces to inspect rocks. Connected coast
How dunes, beaches and headlands work together
Woolacombe's dunes are not separate from the geology story. They sit behind the beach because sand can be moved, trapped by plants and reshaped by wind. The rocky headlands at either end help frame the bay, while the open beach and dune edge show the mobile part of the coast.
That does not make dunes a place for digging or shortcuts. If your main interest is how to visit them responsibly, read the dune guide rather than treating this page as access advice. Safety first
Keep the geology where it is
Do not climb cliff faces, enter caves, scramble below unstable slopes or remove rock, sand, fossils or other material from protected or private sites. Cliff stability changes with weather and erosion, and a visitor guide cannot tell you whether a particular face is safe on the day. Follow signs, land-manager instructions, lifeguard advice and any local restrictions.
- Look from public places: beaches, signed paths and established viewpoints are enough for this guide.
- Do not collect: leave loose material, fossils, shells in protected areas and rock fragments where they are, especially on designated or private land.
- Stay clear of cliff bases: rockfall risk is not always obvious from below.
- Check the day: weather, tide, beach patrols and signs can change what is sensible.
