How to make heritage work with children
For families, heritage days work best when the visit has movement built in. Ilfracombe gives harbour walking and viewpoints. Clovelly gives a memorable street-and-harbour route, but it is steep and not the easiest choice with pushchairs. Arlington Court or Hartland Abbey can work when gardens, grounds and indoor time are all available, but opening days and facilities should be checked first.
Do not plan every minute around interpretation boards. Leave time for food, toilets and a short walk. A good North Devon culture day should still feel like a holiday, not homework.

Start with the story closest to Woolacombe
If you only have a spare morning, do not drive straight past the local heritage. Mortehoe gives a compact village stop with church, lanes and headland context. Morte Point adds maritime atmosphere, wildlife watching and the physical drama that shaped local settlement. Woolacombe village itself tells the resort story: beach access, holiday accommodation, surf culture and family tourism layered onto an older coastal landscape.
That local-first approach also helps visitors understand the wider coast. Once you have seen Morte Point and Woolacombe Warren, Ilfracombe's harbour, Clovelly's steep village street and Hartland's wilder coast feel connected rather than random day trips.

Use heritage days as your weather valve
When the beach is windy, wet or too exposed, a heritage trip can save the day. Ilfracombe and Barnstaple work well for changeable weather because you can mix indoor stops, harbour or town walks and food. Country-house visits can be good on cloudy days, but gardens and coastal approaches still need waterproofs.
