Check patrols before choosing a beach
North Devon lifeguard cover is seasonal and can change, so do not choose a swimming or bodyboarding beach from an old list. Start with a beach that has a current individual RNLI page, check the patrol dates and times for your visit, then use the flags and local signs when you arrive.

- Before travel: open the individual RNLI page for your chosen beach and check the displayed patrol dates and times.
- On arrival: look for red-and-yellow flags, read beach signage and ask lifeguards if anything has changed.
- If there are no flags: treat that as no lifeguards on duty and rethink entering the water.

For non-operational planning, use the Croyde beach guide. Do not treat Croyde as a fallback unless today’s RNLI listing, flags and signs support entering the water for your group.
Westward Ho!
Check the RNLI Westward Ho! Beach page first. On 14 July 2026, it listed daily 2026 patrol dates from 16 May to 27 September, patrol times of 10am to 6pm, and “No Flags = No Lifeguards”.

Flags
What the flags tell you on the day
The RNLI flag system is the live decision layer on a lifeguarded beach. A page listing a patrol season is useful before travel, but the flags, signs and lifeguard team at the beach tell you what is happening now.
- Red-and-yellow flags: the lifeguarded area for swimming and bodyboarding while lifeguards are operating.
- Black-and-white chequered flags: the area for surfboards and other craft, not a swimming area.
- Red flag: do not enter the water.
- No flags: the RNLI beach pages repeat the key point: no flags means no lifeguards.
If you are unsure what the flags or conditions mean for your group, ask the lifeguards before entering. If there is no lifeguard patrol, choose a dry-land beach visit or a different plan rather than guessing.
No patrol
If your first-choice beach has no visible flags
Do not assume a patrol is operating somewhere else nearby. Open the RNLI lifeguarded-beach finder, check the individual page for the beach you are considering, and read the signs when you arrive.
For many families, the right answer is still a beach day without entering the water: sand play, a walk, photos, food nearby or a different activity. Lifeguard cover helps with one part of the decision, but it does not remove the need to judge tides, weather, surf and your group’s ability.
