Getting around North Devon without a car
Woolacombe itself is walkable. Wider North Devon requires deliberate planning — bus routes exist, but services are limited, seasonal and not always practical with family kit.

What you can and cannot expect
If you are already in Woolacombe, the village, the beach and the coast path are all on foot. That is genuinely useful — you do not need a car to have a full Woolacombe beach day, to walk to Morte Point or to spend time in the village. Getting around wider North Devon by public transport is a different proposition. Bus connections exist between Woolacombe, Ilfracombe and Barnstaple, but services are not continuous, not always frequent, and can be reduced or suspended outside the main season. The honest assessment: one or two planned excursions a week without a car is realistic. Building an entire North Devon holiday around car-free transport requires research, flexibility and tolerance for limited schedules.

On foot
What works from Woolacombe without transport
The coast path connects Woolacombe to Morte Point and Mortehoe village, both accessible on foot in reasonable conditions. The walk to Morte Point is the main local walking excursion; there is a village pub, a church and a small shop in Mortehoe. These are genuine options for a car-free day that does not involve sitting on a bus.
The beach itself, the seafront and the village all operate without needing to move the car. Hire outlets for beach kit, food, and local services are in the village. For most of what a beach holiday involves, the walking distance is fine.
Going further on foot — to Croyde, Braunton or Saunton — involves much longer distances on roads or paths that are not all suitable for an easy walk. These are not practical on-foot options for most visitors with children.

- Allow extra time in summer; services can be busy
Pre-planned excursion
- Barnstaple is reachable by bus via Ilfracombe and offers the main retail town, Pannier Market and the start of the Tarka Trail
- This is a longer trip and involves a connection — check current timetables in advance and build in buffer time
- The Barnstaple rail line connects to Exeter, which extends options significantly if you want to travel beyond North Devon

- Check seasonal variations: some routes run less frequently or not at all outside summer — verify the service operates on the day you want to travel
- Plan the return: check the last service back before you commit to the outward journey
- Allow extra time in peak season: buses can be delayed or full on busy beach days
- Accessibility: if you need wheelchair, pushchair or pram space, contact the operator directly to confirm the service on that route and day
- Have a fallback: if the service does not run or is full, a taxi or a different day plan is worth having in mind
Realistic limits
When a car makes a material difference
Reaching the other nearby beaches — Croyde, Saunton Sands and Putsborough — without a car is not straightforward. These beaches have limited or no direct public transport from Woolacombe, and the road distances on foot are significant. If visiting those beaches is a priority for your trip, a car or a pre-booked taxi is the practical answer.
Lundy Island, Arlington Court and the wider North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty also involve either significant distance or public transport connections that make them poor fits for spontaneous car-free visits. These are achievable with careful planning, but are not easy half-day trips by bus.
