The Woolacombe to Putsborough walk is one of the easiest ways to feel the scale of Woolacombe Bay. The simplest version is to walk south along the sand from Woolacombe village towards Putsborough, the quieter end of the bay below Baggy Point.
The catch is tide and conditions. The beach route is best when there is plenty of firm sand exposed. If the tide is high, the surf is pushing up the beach, or the wind is making the sand unpleasant, use the South West Coast Path and Marine Drive option instead.

Pick the route before you set off
Beach walk
Best for simple out-and-back walking and families when firm sand is exposed. Distance depends on start point; treat it as roughly 1.5 to 3 miles one way.
Marine Drive route
Best for high tide, windier days or walkers who want views over the bay without relying on the sand.
Baggy Point extension
Best for stronger walkers. This turns a beach stroll into a bigger coast-path day.
Beach route
Walk south along Woolacombe Sands
Start from Woolacombe village, the Esplanade or one of the beach access points near the main beach. Face the sea and turn left, walking south with Woolacombe village behind you and Baggy Point ahead. Putsborough is the southern end of the same long bay.
At lower tide, the firm sand makes this feel easy: children can run, dogs have more space where rules allow, and the route is obvious. At Putsborough, stop at the beach, use facilities if open, then return the same way if the tide window still works.
Tide
Check whether the tide is coming in or going out
The beach route is easiest when the tide is lower and falling, or when there is clearly enough firm sand for the whole walk and return. Avoid assuming that because you can start on dry sand you will have the same route back.
On a rising tide, water can move into channels and push walkers higher up the beach, where sand may be softer, wetter or interrupted by dunes, rocks and other beach users. Check Woolacombe tide times before setting off, know your exit points, and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard in a coastal emergency.
Practical
Facilities, families and dogs
- Woolacombe: easiest for toilets, parking, food and beach shops before you leave.
- Putsborough: quieter and more stripped back; check current facility opening and Putsborough parking before relying on cafe, toilets or car park services.
- Dogs: follow signs at both ends and use the dog beach guide for Woolacombe zone rules.
- Families: start early enough that you are not racing the tide, and take water, layers and sun protection.
Extensions
Baggy Point and Croyde turn this into a bigger walk
If Putsborough feels like the warm-up rather than the destination, continue towards Baggy Point. This is where the outing changes from beach walk to coast-path walk.
