WOOLACOMBE TIDE TIMES: WHAT THE TIDES MEAN FOR YOUR BEACH DAY
LOW TIDE, HIGH TIDE, AND HOW THE SEA SHAPES EVERY VISIT
Woolacombe is not a beach where the tide is a small detail. The bay changes shape through the day: sand opens up, rock pools appear, surf breaks move, and coves like Barricane can go from perfect exploring territory to almost fully covered. Checking Woolacombe tide times before you set off is as important as checking the weather.

HOW BIG ARE THE TIDES AT WOOLACOMBE?
Woolacombe sits on the outer Bristol Channel, an area known for big tides. The wider Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary have one of the world's largest tidal ranges: Natural Resources Wales describes the range as second highest in the world, between 12 and 14 metres in places.
Do not transfer those huge figures directly onto Woolacombe. The beach is on the outer Channel, so the local range is smaller than the upper estuary, but still large enough to transform the bay. Nearby Ilfracombe predictions show Woolacombe's practical range: around 7m on bigger spring tides and nearer 4m on neaps. The Met Office Woolacombe beach forecast notes that tide heights are given above chart datum and based on the nearest tidal station.
WHAT LOW TIDE MEANS AT WOOLACOMBE
Low tide is when Woolacombe feels at its biggest. Main Beach becomes a wide, flat sweep of sand with room for ball games, long walks, sandcastles and easier paddling. For families with younger children, low to mid tide is usually the most forgiving window because the water is farther out and the shallows spread over more beach.
At Barricane, low tide is the main event. This small cove just north of the main beach has rock pools, gullies and stones. Plan for roughly two hours before to two hours after low water if rock pooling is the aim — that is when the pools are exposed before the sea starts taking the lower rocks back. Coastwise North Devon notes deep crevices, gullies and rock pools on both sides of the beach.
At Putsborough, the south end of the bay opens out dramatically at low tide. It is a good choice if the village end feels crowded, especially for families who want more space.
WHAT HIGH TIDE MEANS AT WOOLACOMBE
High tide narrows the beach. On bigger tides, the sea can push far up the sand, so there is less room for beach games and less margin for towels, boards and windbreaks. Barricane's rock pools are covered, and the cove becomes much less useful for exploring.
High tide can still be good for swimming when conditions are calm because the water is close and deeper. It can also suit beginner surf sessions on small, clean days, when waves are softer and closer in. For toddlers, rock pooling and long sandy walks, low tide is usually better.
WHAT THE TIDES MEAN FOR SURFING
Woolacombe is a beach break, so the tide changes where and how the waves break. Low to mid tide often gives more shape and a steeper wave face, which can suit intermediate surfers when there is clean swell. High tide can be gentler on small days, but on bigger or messy days it may be less forgiving.
Use the tide page alongside the Woolacombe surf forecast. Surf schools will normally time lessons around the safest combination of tide and swell.
UNDERSTANDING THE TIDAL CYCLE
Most UK coasts have two high tides and two low tides in just over 24 hours. The National Tidal and Sea Level Facility explains that UK high tides occur roughly every 12 hours 25 minutes, because the lunar day is about 24 hours 50 minutes. In plain English: the tide does not happen at the same time tomorrow. It shifts later each day.
Check the tide chart the evening before your visit, then again in the morning. Rock pooling needs low water. Swimming and easy water access can work better around mid to high tide in calm conditions. Long beach walks are best when the tide is falling or low.
Spring tides happen around new and full moon, when the range between high and low is largest. Neap tides happen around quarter moons, when the range is smaller. A spring low gives the biggest beach; a spring high gives the least spare sand.
HOW TO USE OUR LIVE TIDE PAGE
Use today's live Woolacombe tide times for the actual times before you travel. The page shows today's tide chart, high and low water times, and tide heights so you can match the numbers to your plans.
For a first visit, use this rule: if you want space, sand and Barricane rock pools, aim for low tide. If you want quick water access, check conditions and consider mid to high tide. If surf is the reason for the trip, check both the tide and the surf forecast.
