Which part of Woolacombe Beach should you aim for?
If this is your first Woolacombe day, think of the beach in three simple zones. Start at the village end if you want the easiest arrival, toilets, food, surf schools and the main beach entrances. Use Barricane or Combesgate for a shorter cove stop when the tide leaves enough space. Head along the long beach towards Putsborough for a bigger sand-and-walk day. Always use official maps, beach signs, car park notices and lifeguard advice for current access, restrictions and conditions.

Best for first arrival
This is the practical starting point for most visitors. The Esplanade and Sandy Burrows car parks are signed from the village side, and the main beach entrances put you closest to toilets, food, surf hire and the busiest supervised beach area when lifeguards are on duty. Use the Woolacombe parking guide before you travel, then follow signs when you arrive.
Best for a cove stop
North of the main beach, Barricane Beach and Combesgate are smaller coves rather than full beach-day bases. They work best as short stops, rockpooling or scenery breaks when the tide and signs make access sensible. Do not assume there will be space at high tide, and do not rely on them for the full range of facilities.
Best for space and walking
The beach runs south-west toward Putsborough Sands, with dunes and Marine Drive behind parts of the sand. This is the direction to choose for a longer walk, more space away from the village end, or a bigger beach day. Check the Woolacombe tide times before committing to a long out-and-back on the sand.

Parking and first decisions
For the village end, look for the Esplanade and Sandy Burrows car parks. Parkin Estates says visitors should follow signs for those car parks when arriving in the village, and the local tourism site lists them as the closest beach car parks. Treat prices, payment methods, early-bird timings and vehicle limits as current-day checks rather than fixed facts.
Marine Drive runs behind the dunes above the longer beach and is now managed by the National Trust. It can make sense when your plan is a longer beach walk, dune-side arrival or a south-beach start, but it is not the same as parking in the village. Check National Trust opening times, charges and vehicle restrictions before choosing it, and use the official signs once you are there.

Where facilities are easiest
For toilets, food, beach shops, surf hire and quick exits back to the village, stay near the main Woolacombe beach entrances. Use it as orientation, then confirm on the day.

What to check before you walk down
- Tide: low tide gives the widest beach and makes coves feel more usable. High tide narrows the sand and can change whether a cove stop is practical. Check today's tide times before choosing your zone.
- Safety: use the main lifeguarded beach area when you want supervised swimming, and follow flags, signs and lifeguard advice. Read the beach safety guide before planning a sea swim, surf lesson or bodyboarding session.
- Dogs and restrictions: dog rules vary by beach section and season. Check signs at the beach, especially around the northern section, the stream, Mill Rock and the southern beach.
- Access and parking: car park opening, prices, payment and beach access routes can change. Official signs and operator notices on the day override any visitor guide.
