Woolacombe's sea temperature ranges from around 9 to 10°C in February to 17 to 18°C in August and September. A 3/2mm wetsuit is comfortable for most summer visitors; a thicker 4/3mm suit is worth it from October through to April. For children, even in August, a wetsuit extends comfort significantly and makes a beach day much longer.
The honest answer for most summer visitors: if you plan to spend more than half an hour in the water, hire one. If you are only paddling at ankle depth, you can skip it. For sea swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding, or snorkelling, a wetsuit is well worth the hire cost. Surf shops and hire stalls on and around The Esplanade and the main beach-front streets in Woolacombe rent wetsuits by the hour or by the day. No advance booking is typically needed; walk-up hire is the norm. Most shops have boards of kit stacked outside, making them easy to spot on the way to the beach.
Several operators are available, and prices and stock vary. It is worth walking along the esplanade to compare options rather than going to the first shop you see, particularly in peak season when certain sizes can sell out earlier in the day. Most operators offer hourly hire for a quick session, half-day hire, and full-day hire. Full-day hire is usually the best value if you are planning a beach day. Some shops may hire by the week for longer stays, which works well if you are in Woolacombe for a week and want to use it across several days.
Prices vary by season and by operator. Do not rely on any specific figure found online as these change regularly. Check with the shop or surf school website directly for current rates. A deposit is required in all cases and is returned on clean, undamaged return.

Wetsuits for children
Most hire shops stock a range of children's sizes. Bring the child's approximate height and weight so the shop can suggest the right size quickly. Children's wetsuits follow similar fit rules to adult ones: snug at the neck, wrists, and ankles, but not so tight that the child finds it uncomfortable to move in.
For younger children and warmer summer months, some shops also offer shortie wetsuits (short arms and legs) or rash vests. These give some thermal protection without the full coverage of a steamer suit, and are easier for smaller children to get on and off. Ask at the shop what they have available for the age group and time of year.

For a single trip to Woolacombe, hire is almost always the right choice. It is simpler, there is no wetsuit to carry home, and no storage problem at the end of the week.

Budget brand-new wetsuits are available from surf shops in town and online. A decent 3/2mm steamer from a recognised brand will outlast many seasons if rinsed in fresh water after each use and stored out of direct sunlight.
