Combesgate can work well for families who want a smaller, quieter Woolacombe cove, but it is not the easiest default beach day. Choose it when your group can manage the current access, you have checked the tide and weather, and you are happy to rely on today's signs rather than fixed facilities. Why it needs a check
A small cove changes faster than a big beach
Combesgate is a small cove north of Woolacombe's main beach. That scale is the reason many families like it: less open, less busy and more contained. It is also why you should check conditions before committing. Tide state, swell, wind, access and beach signs can change how usable the day feels much more quickly than on a wide, serviced beach.
Before leaving, check today's tides and the current forecast. On arrival, read the access signs and follow any landowner, council, coastguard or lifeguard information. If conditions do not match your plan, choose another beach rather than forcing the day.
Access
Think about the way down before you carry kit
Visit Devon currently describes Combesgate access as being by a long flight of steps and notes limited beach at high tide. Treat that as a prompt to check the route on the day, not as a guarantee that every family can manage it. Young children, buggies, mobility needs and heavy bags all change the answer.
Pack as if you may need to carry everything back up again: fewer bags, water, layers and enough hands for children. If anyone needs reliable level access, use the accessibility guide and choose a beach where current access information clearly fits.
Dogs and facilities
Use current signs for the rules that matter
North Devon Council's beach information, checked on 14 July 2026, lists council-owned beaches separately and says dogs are allowed on NDC-owned beaches subject to district-wide controls. Combesgate is not in that NDC-owned beach list, so do not use the council page alone as your dog-rule answer.
Woolacombe & Mortehoe Tourist Information, checked on 14 July 2026, states that dogs are not allowed on Combesgate Beach from 30 April to 30 September and tells visitors to check signs locally. The practical rule is simple: read the entrance signs before taking a dog down, and change plan if they differ from what you expected.
Do not assume toilets, food, lifeguard cover, parking or other facilities at the cove. If those are essential for your family, choose a beach where today's provision is clearly confirmed before you set off.
Water safety
Do not treat sheltered as safe
A cove can feel calmer than the main beach, but that does not prove safe water. This guide does not make a swimming recommendation, claim lifeguard coverage or give a safe tide window. The RNLI's advice is to choose a lifeguarded beach where possible and swim between red and yellow flags when a lifeguarded area is operating.

You need confirmed facilities, easier access, more space at any tide, clear lifeguard provision or a plan that does not depend on local signs and conditions.
