Combesgate Beach, Woolacombe

Combesgate Beach is the small sandy cove just north of Woolacombe, beyond Barricane and below The Esplanade. At the right tide it can be a lovely place for rock pools, a short calm-water paddle, or time away from the busiest sand. At the wrong tide, there may be very little usable beach.

That is the main decision point. Combesgate suits visitors who are happy to check the tide, travel light and use steps. Woolacombe main beach is usually better for families with lots of kit, buggies, mobility needs, summer dog plans, or anyone who wants lifeguarded swimming and more facilities close by.

Combesgate sits at the north end of Woolacombe, beyond Barricane Beach. The National Trust's Woolacombe short walk follows The Esplanade past Barricane and towards the public toilets and Combesgate Valley sign, so think of the cove as a walk-on beach rather than a separate driving destination.

Combesgate is tide-dependent. Local visitor information describes it as a cove reached by steps, with a long flight of steps and a high-tide warning in current tourism copy. Nearby Barricane is also described by the National Trust as unavailable at high tide, so do not treat this stretch of coves as all-tide beach space.

Plan around low tide if you want sand, rock pools and room to settle. As the tide rises the useful space can shrink quickly. Do not wander around the rocks without watching the water, and leave earlier than you think you need to if the tide is pushing in. If the sea is already high in the cove, choose Woolacombe main beach instead. Check today's tide times before you set out.

Combesgate is not level-access. Expect a long flight of steps down from the road and a beach with rocks as well as sand. That makes it interesting for rock pooling at low tide, but less forgiving than Woolacombe main beach for anyone with pushchairs, heavy kit or limited mobility.

• Wear shoes with grip, because steps and rocks can be slippery when wet.
• Avoid carrying more than you can comfortably bring back up.
• For buggies, heavy cool boxes or tired toddlers, the main beach is the easier choice.
• Check local signs before going down and follow local advice on the day.

North Devon Council lists public toilets at Combesgate Beach, with daily opening from March to November and no disabled cubicle or RADAR key facility listed. The cove itself has no beach-level facilities, so Woolacombe main beach is simpler for a facilities-heavy day.

The RNLI patrols Woolacombe Beach, with 2026 daily patrols from 2 May to 27 September, 10am to 6pm. Combesgate has no separately verified RNLI lifeguard patrol. No flags means no lifeguards. For the safest family setup, use Woolacombe main beach when lifeguards are on duty and swim between the red and yellow flags.

Woolacombe and Mortehoe Tourist Information Centre gives the clearest local date line: dogs are not allowed on Combesgate Beach from 30 April to 30 September. North Devon Council lists Combesgate among private beaches, says dogs are restricted to certain areas and tells visitors to check local signage. Treat the entrance signs as the day-of-visit rule if they differ from online guidance.
