Can you take a dog onto Croyde Beach?
Not during the main summer restriction. North Devon Council says dogs must not be present on the restricted area of Croyde Bay between 1 May and 30 September. From 1 October to 30 April, that seasonal beach restriction does not apply.
That is the useful answer if you are choosing a beach for a dog walk. It also means a summer visit needs a different plan: do not assume that a quiet-looking stretch of sand, an early start or a route through the dunes makes the beach available to dogs.
The Council’s current beaches information identifies Croyde Bay as a privately owned beach with site-specific enforceable dog controls. Its dog control order and map show that the restriction applies to the marked Croyde Bay area, so look at the signs when you arrive rather than trying to judge a boundary from a map at home.
Summer visits
The dunes are not the same as the beach
The dunes behind Croyde Bay have a separate seasonal rule. Between 1 May and 30 September, North Devon Council says dogs must be kept on a lead in the restricted dune area. This is different from the beach rule: it does not turn the beach into a dog-walking route, and it is not a reason to let a dog run free through the dunes.
For a summer walk, keep your dog on a lead where the signage requires it and stay alert for changes at entrances and paths. The Council’s information names John Fowler Holiday Parks as the landowner; its current Ruda Holiday Park visitor page confirms that the park sits directly at Croyde Beach, but does not replace the Council’s detailed control information. In a conflict or if a sign is unclear, follow the signs on the ground.

Read the entrance signs
Confirm the restricted area and any lead instructions at the point you enter. They are the clearest guide to the boundaries that apply that day.
Keep the beach and dunes distinct
In the seasonal control period, the beach exclusion and the dunes’ lead requirement are separate rules. Plan the route before you leave the car.
At any time of year, take bags and clear up after your dog. The Council’s district-wide dog controls still apply alongside the Croyde-specific rules, including cleaning up after a dog and putting a dog on a lead when directed by an authorised person.
