The drive
The broad route is south from Dundee through central Scotland and then down the motorway network to North Devon. OSRM's checked route runs via A92, M90, M8, A702 and A74(M), joining the M6 south, then M5 south to junction 27 at Tiverton, then A361 into North Devon and local roads including A399, A3123 and B3343 into Woolacombe.
A route that detours via Barnstaple is almost the same distance and time: about 529 miles and 10.1 hours before stops. In practice, follow live navigation once you reach North Devon. Some trips will be sent through Barnstaple and Braunton. Others may cut across towards Ilfracombe and Woolacombe depending on traffic, roadworks and the time of day.
The critical decision point is M5 Junction 27 at Tiverton. Do not continue past this junction towards Exeter. Leave the M5 here and take the A361 west towards Barnstaple. This is the correct turning for North Devon.

- Leave central Dundee heading south on the A92, then join the M90 south across the Forth Road Bridge towards Edinburgh.
- From the M90, pick up the M8 west and then the A702 south towards the A74(M). Join the A74(M) / M6 at Gretna and continue south.
- Follow the M6 south through Carlisle, the Lake District fringes, the Midlands and past the M5 junction.
- Join the M5 south and continue past Birmingham, Bristol and Taunton.
- Leave the M5 at Junction 27 (Tiverton interchange) and join the A361 North Devon Link Road heading west towards Barnstaple.
- Follow the A361 through South Molton and on to Barnstaple, then continue on local roads through Braunton and follow signs for Woolacombe.
The A361 from M5 Junction 27 to Barnstaple is approximately 35 miles. From Barnstaple, Woolacombe is a further 12 miles via Braunton. Allow at least an hour for this final section in peak season.

Where to break the journey
Do not over-plan the stop. Pick a broad band that suits your departure time rather than committing to a specific services name before you leave.
A northern England stop works if you leave Dundee later and want the first day to feel manageable. A Midlands stop — somewhere around the M6 corridor past Birmingham — gives a more even two-day split. A Bristol or M5 corridor stop makes day one longer but leaves a very short second day into North Devon.
For school-holiday arrivals, avoid aiming for Woolacombe late on a Friday afternoon if you can. The A361, Barnstaple, Braunton and the final roads into Woolacombe can all slow when changeover traffic, supermarket stops and beach-day traffic overlap. A morning or early-afternoon arrival is usually calmer.
If you are splitting overnight, useful options include Carlisle and the Lake District area for a northern stop, or Bristol and Taunton if you want to push further on day one.

If you are staying in the village, check the parking arrangement before you travel. Woolacombe is compact and steep in places, so "nearby parking" can feel different after a 530-mile drive with bags and children.

Public transport from Dundee to Woolacombe is possible but it is a full-day plan. There is no direct train from Dundee to Barnstaple. The broad shape is Dundee south by long-distance rail, then a connection towards Exeter, then the Tarka Line from Exeter to Barnstaple, which takes about an hour and a quarter.
Barnstaple is still not Woolacombe. Stagecoach service 303 links Barnstaple and Woolacombe, but departures are limited compared with an urban bus route. If your train arrives late in the day or if you are carrying a lot of luggage, a pre-planned taxi from Barnstaple is often the more realistic final leg.

By air
Could you fly from Dundee?
Dundee Airport's current published scheduled destinations are Kirkwall, London Heathrow and Sumburgh, operated by Loganair. Flying is possible as part of the journey, but not simple. From Heathrow you would still need to reach the West Country by rail, hire car or onward connection, then cover the final Woolacombe leg.
For most families, that is more complicated than driving unless you are travelling light or combining a Woolacombe stay with time in London.
