The Drive

Leave Edinburgh city centre on the A720 City Bypass, heading south. Join the M74 at the southern end of the bypass and follow it south through Lanarkshire to the English border at Gretna. Continue south on the M6 through Carlisle, the Lake District fringes and the Midlands. At the M5, head south towards Bristol and Devon. Leave the M5 at Junction 27 (Tiverton interchange) and follow the A361 North Devon Link Road towards Barnstaple. From Barnstaple, continue on the A361 through Braunton to Woolacombe.

The motorway section — M74, M6, M5 — is the backbone of the journey. It is well-signposted and consistently motorway standard until the A361, which is a fast dual carriageway for much of its length but narrows into single-carriageway sections before Barnstaple. The last few miles from Braunton into Woolacombe are on narrower country roads.

The critical decision point is Junction 27 on the M5 at Tiverton. Do not continue past this junction towards Bristol or Exeter — at Junction 27, leave the M5 and take the A361 west towards Barnstaple. This is the correct turning for North Devon.

  1. Leave Edinburgh city centre and pick up the A720 City Bypass, heading south and west around the city to the M74 junction.
  2. Join the M74 south at the A720 interchange and follow it to the English border at Gretna Green, then continue on the M6 south.
  3. Follow the M6 south through Carlisle, past the Lake District exits (Penrith, Kendal, Tebay), through the Midlands (Keele, Stafford) to the M5 junction.
  4. Join the M5 south and continue past Birmingham, Bristol and Taunton.

The A361 from M5 Junction 27 to Barnstaple is approximately 35 miles. From Barnstaple, Woolacombe is a further 12 miles via Braunton. Budget around an hour for this final section in peak season when the single-carriageway roads carry more holiday traffic.

Plan at least two proper breaks on a journey this long. A useful pattern for an early-start Edinburgh departure is a first stop somewhere around the Lake District exits — Tebay services at M6 Junction 38 are well-regarded and fall about halfway through the motorway section. A second break near Taunton, Tiverton or the M5 Junction 27 area sets you up for the final A361 run into North Devon.

Motorway services on the M74 and M6 include Annandale Water (M74), Gretna Green area (M74/A74), Southwaite (M6 near Carlisle), Killington Lake (M6 near Junction 37), Tebay (M6 Junction 38), and Keele (M6 Junctions 15/16). On the M5, Strensham (Junctions 7/8) is useful before Bristol, and Taunton Deane (Junctions 25/26) is the last motorway services before the A361.

The M6 through the Midlands can also slow on summer Friday afternoons, particularly around the Keele and Stafford area. Check live traffic before committing to a departure time and use a live navigation app from the M6 southbound to catch early diversions if needed.

The A361 from Tiverton towards Barnstaple can queue in both directions near Barnstaple in peak summer, particularly on Saturday mornings. The Braunton to Woolacombe road is single-track in places and follows a slow-moving queue when the village is busy. Arriving mid-week or mid-morning reduces these delays.
