By car
The Drive
The simplest planning version is Newcastle south on the A1(M), past Wetherby and towards the M1 or A42/M42 link, then M5 south to Junction 27 at Tiverton, A361 towards Barnstaple, then Braunton and Woolacombe. It is mostly motorway and major A-road until the last North Devon section.
Do not plan it as a quick hop to the coast. The trip can move from easy motorway running to slow holiday traffic once you reach the South West, even before you add comfort stops. With children, surf kit or a Saturday check-in, keep first-evening plans loose.
The A69 and M6 route via Carlisle can also work from west Newcastle. It is usually a little longer, but may feel simpler if you prefer to avoid a long A1(M) run. Treat it as an alternate rather than the default. South of the Midlands, the route shares the M5, A361 and Barnstaple approach with the Leeds to Woolacombe route.

- Leave Newcastle on the A1(M) south, continuing past Wetherby and the North Yorkshire motorway section.
- Continue towards the M1, or follow an A42/M42 Midlands link if that is the better live-traffic option on the day.
- Join the M5 south past Bristol and towards Devon.
- Leave the M5 at Junction 27 for Tiverton, then follow the A361 North Devon Link Road towards Barnstaple.
- From Barnstaple, continue towards Braunton, then follow signs for Woolacombe.
The pinch points are not all at the start. Friday afternoon traffic can affect the A1(M) and Midlands links, while the M5 around Bristol, the A361 and Braunton often shape your arrival time.

Where to Stop
Plan one early break after leaving Tyneside, then another before or around the Midlands. That keeps the motorway section manageable without pushing every stop into the second half of the day.
If you are travelling with children, an overnight break around Bristol, Taunton, Exeter or Tiverton can make the journey feel far less pressured. It also means you reach the A361 and Braunton approach when everyone is fresher.
Near Devon, the M5 Junction 27 and Tiverton area is the useful last planning point before the A361. If you need food, fuel, or a reset before the final North Devon section, do it there rather than waiting until everyone is tired near Barnstaple.
Car-free
Public Transport
Public transport from Newcastle to Woolacombe is possible, but it is a long connected journey. The usual rail pattern is Newcastle towards London or Bristol, then on towards Exeter, Tiverton Parkway or Barnstaple depending on the best connections for your date.
From Exeter, continue on the Tarka Line to Barnstaple, then use a bus or taxi for the final leg into Woolacombe. The Barnstaple to Woolacombe connection is the part to check most carefully, especially outside summer or if you are travelling with beach kit.
