North Devon castles with children: choose the right kind of visit

If your children want towers, ruins and stories, choose carefully. North Devon has a close family attraction in a castle setting, a real medieval castle on Lundy, and wider-Devon castles that work only if you want a longer heritage day.

Which castle-style day fits your family?
Watermouth Castle
A North Devon family attraction in a castle setting, with rides, play areas and gardens. Treat it as an attraction day, not a quiet heritage ruin. Check opening, tickets, accessibility, dogs and the map on the official Watermouth site.
Marisco Castle on Lundy
The clearest North Devon castle story. National Trust visitor information describes Lundy as a car-free island with the 13th-century Marisco Castle, reached by ferry from Ilfracombe or Bideford according to sailings and tides.
Castle Drogo
A National Trust 20th-century castle on Dartmoor, not North Devon. Choose it only as a deliberate full-day heritage trip, then check opening, access routes, pushchair limits, dogs and family facilities.
Compton Castle
A National Trust fortified manor house in South Devon. It has towers and a portcullis feel, but belongs in a wider Devon itinerary, not a quick North Devon plan.
Berry Pomeroy Castle
An English Heritage ruined fortress and unfinished mansion near Totnes. Better for children who enjoy atmospheric remains and stories than for toddlers needing contained facilities.
Arlington Court and local heritage
Arlington Court, Mortehoe history and local prehistoric sites are strong heritage days, but they are not castle days.
Closest choice
Watermouth Castle: pick it for play, not pure history
Watermouth is the most practical answer for many Woolacombe families searching "castles near Woolacombe", but the expectation matters. Its own visitor copy presents it as a family attraction with rides, outdoor play, gardens and accommodation, not as a museum-style castle ruin.

Real castle
Lundy and Marisco Castle: make it an island day
For an actual North Devon castle, Lundy's Marisco Castle is the strongest fit. The National Trust describes Lundy as a car-free island with a small village, church, inn and the 13th-century Marisco Castle. It also says ferry passages run from Ilfracombe or Bideford according to sailings and tides.
That makes Lundy a poor casual wet-weather backup, but a memorable choice for older children who can handle a long, outdoor, transport-led day. Check the National Trust and Lundy visitor information for sailings, island facilities, access notes, dogs, booking and weather disruption.
Wider Devon
Castle Drogo, Compton and Berry Pomeroy: only if the castle is the day
Castle Drogo, Compton Castle and Berry Pomeroy Castle are useful to know about, but they are not easy North Devon options. Choose them only when the castle itself is the point of the outing.
Castle Drogo is the most family-shaped of these on current National Trust information, with family facilities and garden routes, but its pages also warn that pushchairs cannot go around the castle and that access depends on routes, slopes and services. Compton Castle is a fortified manor house with gardens and castle features. Berry Pomeroy is a ruined fortress and mansion managed by English Heritage. For all three, check the managing body before travelling.
