North Devon's events year
North Devon's event calendar mirrors its seasons. Spring brings wildlife walks, walking festivals, and the first surf of the year; summer fills the beaches with surf competitions, open-air markets, and the North Devon Show; autumn turns to arts, literature, and quieter coastal events; winter belongs to the market towns. A visit timed around an event can turn a beach trip into something more distinctive.
Most events here are rooted in the place rather than imported from a generic festival circuit — the North Devon Show is genuinely agricultural, the Appledore Book Festival is genuinely literary, and the surf events are genuinely tied to the swell. That local character is what makes them worth planning around.

April and May
Spring events
Spring is when North Devon opens up for the season. Surf schools and seasonal attractions reopen, the coastal path becomes more active, and the first events of the year take shape.
- North Devon Biosphere events: the North Devon Biosphere Reserve runs guided wildlife walks and nature events through spring — typically tide-dependent seashore events, seal-spotting walks, and botanical surveys. Details appear on the North Devon Biosphere Reserve website.

- May bank holiday events: Ilfracombe harbour, Lynton, and the main market towns typically run bank holiday events; check local noticeboards 2–3 weeks ahead.
June, July and August
Summer events
Summer is the busiest period for North Devon events. The beaches attract surf competitions and beach events; the towns host festivals and markets; and the countryside sees the agricultural calendar in full swing.
- Surf competitions at Woolacombe and Croyde: both beaches host surf competition events typically in summer, timed when swells align. Woolacombe's long beach makes it a natural competition venue. - Woolacombe beach events: live music evenings, beach markets, and community events run through July and August along the esplanade. See the Woolacombe events page for current listings.
- Ilfracombe arts and galleries: open studios, gallery events, and Damien Hirst's Verity sculpture draw visitors year-round. See Ilfracombe things to do.
- North Devon Show: the region's principal agricultural show, typically held in late July or early August, covers livestock, local produce, rural crafts, and family entertainment. One of the most genuinely North Devon events in the calendar — not a generic festival.

September and October
Autumn events
Autumn is perhaps North Devon's best-kept secret as an events season. The beaches are quieter, the light is dramatic, the seals are visible, and two of the region's most distinctive annual events take place.
- Appledore Book Festival: one of North Devon's most distinctive cultural events — a literary festival held annually in Appledore, typically in late September or October, drawing authors and book-lovers to the quayside village. - Ilfracombe coastal arts: open studios, gallery openings, and photography events run into autumn, making use of the distinctive autumn light along the cliffs and harbour.
- Autumn surf events: Atlantic swells build through autumn and sometimes coincide with competition windows. See Woolacombe in autumn and Croyde things to do.
- Wildlife and guided walks: the National Trust runs guided walks and seal-watching events through autumn at Watersmeet, Heddon Valley, and Morte Point. See Morte Point walk and Watersmeet guide. These are often the best-attended guided events of the North Devon year.
November through March
Winter events
Winter belongs to the market towns and the pubs. The coast empties of tourists and fills with locals; the towns run Christmas events; and for those who know where to look, winter North Devon has a character completely its own.
- Barnstaple Christmas lights and market: Barnstaple's Pannier Market and town centre host Christmas events through December. See Barnstaple guide.
