The current official dog-access check, what to look for on arrival and a practical plan for a respectful Saunton visit.

Can dogs go on Saunton Sands?
Yes, based on today’s official check. North Devon Council lists Saunton Sands as allowing dogs all year, with dogs on leads in front of the beach huts. The same Council page says district-wide dog rules still apply, including picking up after your dog and putting your dog on a lead when instructed.
That is the starting point, not the end of the decision. When you arrive, read the beach signs and follow Saunton’s current manager guidance. If a sign, ranger or temporary control says something different on the day, use that local instruction.

Follow the slipway signs before you settle
Saunton Beach’s dog-walking page gives the clearest practical arrival instruction: as you reach the end of the slipway, dog walkers are asked to turn left. Dogs are not permitted on the small space to the right of the slipway. If the beach is busy, the operator asks owners to keep dogs on the lead until they are past the crowds.
Keep your dog close through the car park, slipway and busier entrance area, then check where other dog walkers are being directed. Do not assume that “dogs allowed all year” means every patch of sand beside the slipway is open for dogs in the same way.

Where a lead is the sensible default
Beach huts
North Devon Council’s current beach list says dogs are allowed all year at Saunton Sands, but on leads in front of beach huts. Treat that frontage as a lead zone unless current signs say otherwise.
Slipway and crowds
Saunton Beach asks owners to keep dogs on leads in the car park for safety, and to use leads past crowds when the beach is busy.
Fenced dunes
The beach operator asks visitors to keep dogs on lead inside the fenced area of the dunes. This is separate from the sand itself.
The practical rule is simple: arrive with a lead in your hand. Use it wherever signs ask, wherever people are dense, and anywhere your dog might disturb wildlife, livestock, children or other dogs.

Respect Braunton Burrows and the southern beach
Saunton backs onto Braunton Burrows, a sensitive dune system managed by Christie Devon Estates. North Devon Council’s Braunton Burrows mitigation work describes the Burrows as a Special Area of Conservation and Site of Special Scientific Interest, and identifies recreation impacts including trampling and dog fouling.
The Council’s estuary disturbance report also notes that Saunton Sands can be important for Sanderling and Ringed Plover. You do not need to know every bird species to do the right thing: keep your dog away from resting birds, give wildlife space, stay out of fenced or signed areas and clean up every time.

A respectful dog walk at Saunton
- Check North Devon Council’s beach page and Saunton Beach’s dog-walking page before setting off.
- Read the signs at the car park, slipway and beach entrance before letting your dog range ahead.
- Turn left at the slipway unless current on-site guidance directs dog walkers differently.
- Use a lead through the car park, in front of beach huts, in fenced dune areas and anywhere busy.
- Carry bags, remove dog waste and use bins only where available. If a bin is full, take the bag away.
- Watch the tide, wind and surf. Beach permission for dogs is not a promise that conditions are comfortable or safe.
For families, the best version of Saunton with a dog is usually unhurried: arrive, read the signs, move away from the crowded entrance and give other beach users plenty of room. If your dog is reactive, Saunton Beach says there is a shortcut through the dunes from the left-hand side of the car park, but you still need to follow current dune signs and lead requests.

This guide answers the dog-access question for Saunton Sands. It does not promise parking spaces, toilets, food, water quality, lifeguard cover, low-tide space or quiet conditions on any particular day. Those details can change by season, weather, tide, staffing and site operations.

Safety
Check beach conditions as well as dog rules
A dog-friendly beach can still be the wrong beach at the wrong time. Saunton is open, wide and exposed, so wind, surf and tide can affect the visit. Keep dogs away from the water if surf, currents or fatigue are a concern, and check current sources for lifeguard or facility information.
